Southern California has long been a popular destination for new college students looking to enjoy the surf and sand as part of their college experience.
As a result, many colleges and universities in Southern California have become increasingly competitive to gain admission, including San Diego State University. For those wondering what it takes to get accepted into San Diego State University, here’s an overview of admission criteria and the most popular academic programs available to current and incoming students.
San Diego State University students from all over the United States, making it a more selective school than many students may initially assume. Since SDSU draws from such a large applicant base, incoming students often worry about the odds of admission.
The top questions we see from the incoming first-year or transfer students are:
Here’s a rundown of those questions and more for insights on what it takes to be accepted to San Diego State University.
San Diego State University’s acceptance rate is 37%, making it a selective school among national colleges and universities.
Although SDSU is a state university, it draws applicants from across the country and internationally, increasing the odds of admission. Students applying to San Diego State University should have a well-rounded application, a strong grade point average, challenging high school coursework and extracurriculars, and an above-average SAT or ACT score. Nearly 50% of the admitted students to SDSU has an SAT score between 1200-1399, which adds to the selectivity for students looking to apply.
San Diego State University requires incoming transfer students to have at least a 2.0 grade point average and 60 credits of college courses to transfer.
Given these transfer requirements, incoming first-year students coming right out of high school should plan to have a grade point average well above 2.5 since they would presumably be admitted without the hours of college credit required for transfer students. While GPA isn’t the only determining factor, grade point averages above 2.5 should be expected for incoming first-year students.
Since SDSU is a selective school with only a 37% acceptance rate, applicants with a 2.5-grade point average may struggle to gain admission.
Those with a grade point average at or below 2.5 have a better chance of admission with a robust standardized test score – on the higher end of the 1200 – 1399 range in which most applicants fall – or advanced high school coursework that may have contributed to the grade point average.
